Puffy eyes

We have puffy eyes when the fluids get trapped in the tissues under the eyes. Usually the eyes are puffiest when you awake. Puffy eyes can also be a sign of sinus and allergy problems. Hangovers can also produce puffy eyes. At first the alcohol lowers the anti-diuretic hormone but as the hangover gets into full force, ADH increases again and helps the body to retain fluid. Drug induced hypothyroidism can also cause puffy eyes. The skin under the eyes is the thinnest anywhere on the body and is prone to dryness due to having fewer oil glands than the rest of facial skin. Fat pads surround the eyes, and the muscles that encase the upper and lower eyelids hold the fat (and skin) in place. There are plenty of blood vessels around the eyes, which can show through the thin skin, contributing in some cases to dark under-eye circles. Fluids that get trapped in eye tissue can trigger puffiness, while excess fat in the area can produce a permanent puffy look.

More about puffy eyes

Mild puffiness of the skin under your eyes can result from a number of causes, including:
* Heredity
* Fluid retention such as due to changes in weather or hormone levels
* Allergies or dermatitis, especially if puffiness is accompanied by redness and itching
Under-eye puffiness is usually only a temporary cosmetic concern and rarely a sign of a serious underlying medical condition. Some tips for reducing mild under-eye puffiness:
* Raise the head of your bed at night. This helps prevent fluids from accumulating around your eyes as you sleep.
* While sitting up, apply a cool tap water compress to the skin under your eyes for a few minutes. You can also use chilled cucumber slices, a refrigerated gel mask or chilled, damp tea bags.
There is some anecdotal evidence that hemorrhoid cream applied under the eyes can reduce puffiness. But no clinical trials have evaluated its effectiveness for this use. Also, ingredients in hemorrhoid cream may be irritating to the skin around your eyes, resulting in dryness and inflammation.
